Chi, mapping and balance
Feng Shui practitioners arrange spaces with attention to the flow of chi, or vital energy. A Bagua connects areas of a room or home with life themes, while color, material, placement and openness are used as symbolic supports.
- Chi: the animating energy that practitioners seek to keep moving smoothly.
- Bagua: a map connecting parts of a space with themes such as career, family or relationships.
- Balance: the aim is responsive intention rather than a universal decorating formula.
Cultural context is consistent with Duke University’s overview of the Feng Shui compass, which describes qi, Yin and Yang, the Five Elements and the Bagua as central concepts.
