The Elder Futhark is historically a Germanic writing system. The divinatory meanings, reversals and spreads in this guide belong mainly to modern interpretive practice and should not be treated as a single, certain ancient doctrine.

A carved writing system

Runes were a Germanic method of writing developed in the centuries after the beginning of the Common Era. Their angular forms suited carving into materials such as wood, bone and metal.

  • Alphabet: each rune represented a sound as well as a name.
  • Twenty-four signs: the Elder Futhark sequence is named for its first six runes.
  • Modern interpretation: contemporary readers also use the symbols for meditation and divination.

The three ættir

Modern rune guides commonly organize the sequence into Freyr’s Ætt, Hagal’s Ætt and Tyr’s Ætt. The groups move broadly from resources and relationships, through disruption and resilience, toward duty, community and legacy.

  • Freyr’s Ætt: wealth, strength, exchange, movement and joy.
  • Hagal’s Ætt: challenge, timing, mystery, protection and transformation.
  • Tyr’s Ætt: justice, growth, partnership, intuition and inheritance.

Upright, reversed and blank

An upright rune is usually read through its direct symbolic theme. Some readers interpret an inverted directional rune as delayed, blocked or distorted energy. Seven symmetrical runes look the same when turned, so a “blocked expression” may be used instead.

The blank rune: some commercial sets include an unmarked piece representing fate or the unknowable. It is a twentieth-century addition, not an Elder Futhark rune.
